Durban – The owner of a truck that ploughed into several vehicles on Pinetown's Fields Hill in 2013, killing 24 people, is set to appear in the Verulam Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Gregory Govender, the owner of Sagekal Logistics CC, was charged with contraventions of the National Road Traffic Act, the Immigration Act, and operating an unroadworthy vehicle.
At his last appearance, it was indicated that his attorney would make representations to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The driver of the truck, Swazi national Sanele May, was sentenced to eight years imprisonment in November 2014.
The truck he was driving crashed into a fully-loaded minibus taxi and several other vehicles on September 5, 2013.
Govender was not initially charged. It emerged during May's initial bail application that the truck he was driving was unroadworthy and that May was an illegal immigrant.
Govender's business woes were made public last year when Wozani Berg Gasoline (Pty) Ltd sought relief from the courts to have his company settle their R1-million debt.
The sheriff of the court attached Govender's assets. He told the Daily News that, after the accident, no one wanted to do business with him.
He is out on a warning.
