A MAN has escaped serious injury after he swerved and crashed on the Western Freeway while trying to avoid a four-wheel-drive travelling on the wrong side of the road in Pentland Hills.

The 37-year-old smashed into the back of a truck while trying to avoid an oncoming grey or black SUV, towing a red Wakesetter ski boat that was driving east in the westbound lanes of the Western Freeway.

The crash occurred at the Mortons Road overpass, about 9.50am last Wednesday.

The driver’s car was left a crumpled mess and he was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The offending SUV failed to stop and moved into the correct lane of traffic and continued travelling east towards Bacchus Marsh/Melbourne after the crash.

Victoria Police media officer Leonie Johnson said police believe there were numerous other drivers that would have witnessed the incident and urge those people to speak to police.

Investigators would also like to speak to anyone with dashcam footage of the vehicle travelling in the area.
