20 YEARS AGO — 1998

Nancy Dukes and Toby, her standard poodle “therapy dog,” paid a visit to Trucksville Nursery School recently. She has three poodles that are used in Pet Assisted Therapy at hospitals and nursing homes in the region. Students Meghan Bloom, Sergey Galkina, Bobby Graham and Max Cook got a close look at Toby.

Tiger Cub Pack 44 of Ross Elementary School, Sweet Valley recently toured Pizza Hut in Dallas and made their own personal pizzas. Participants included Raymond Perry, Richard Lamoreaux, Robert Perry, Ryan Perry, Kody Sutliff, Josh Brucher and Brady Sutliff.

Cub Pack #155 recently held their Boat Races at the Educational Building in Trucksville. First place was Michael McHutchison, 2nd place, John Paul Lamoreaux, 3rd place, Michael Smith, and 4th place, John Ashley. Cub Pack #155 is sponsored by the Trucksville United Methodist Church. Cubmaster is Dave Brakefield.

30 YEARS AGO — 1988

Mr. Mike Parahus, Training & Development Manager for Saab-Scania of America, Inc. has announced that Timothy Haddle of RD 1, Dallas, has received the Saab Master Technician rating. This is the highest attainable level in their Master Technician Program.

The Dallas Soccer Club is currently planning its annual craft show, “Crafts and More,” to be held April 23 at the Dallas High School. Club parents will offer refreshments and baked goods, and conduct a raffle. Planning the fund raiser are: Judy Rogers, Mary Ann Cramton, Josei Reabuck, Carol Burak, Lynne LaFrance, Morag Michael, Cindy Ursiak, Carole Morris and Janet Klimovitz.

The Dallas Junior High School American Experience Class, taught by Mrs. Maryann Storz, recently studied a unit on the American Presidency. The concluding class activity was a debate on the question, “Would a woman make a good president?” Extensive research was done on the historical roles women have played in national and world leadership. Some of the participants in the debate were: C.J. Clothier, Steven Oliver, Brian Fett, Jeff Mokychic, Lynn Baluh, Stephanie Reese, Eric Paczewski and Willard Whitesell.

40 YEARS AGO — 1978

Dallas third grade students recently presented the play, “The Selfish Giant.” Members of the spring scene were: Chris Fetterman, Warren Koch, Erin Cleary, Kevin Brown, Kristine Hanafy, Robert Kruchinski, Staci Quaglietti, Jim Richie, Kristin Piatkowski, Lisa Ide, Shaunna Griffin, Beth Adams, Deana Harris, Jennifer Ondish, Michele Price, Leigh Pawling, Beth Scott, John Richie and Jennifer Troupe.

A Wilkes-Barre area bank became one of the first contributors to the Back Mountain Memorial Library Auction 1978, when Ernest Ashridge, vice-president of Hanover Bank, handed the keys of a scale replica Model T Ford to Rena Rothschild. Mrs. Rothschild, chairlady for the 1978 auction, stated that this year’s auction goal is more than $30,000.

Miss Kim Perrego was the first place winner in the recent art contest of the Harveys Lake Women’s Service Club.

50 YEARS AGO — 1968

Local survivors of the Kiwanis Music Festival semi-finals held Saturday night at Dallas Senior High School were the Trumpet Trio and the Alto Saxophonist. Tom Shaver, Tom Vernon and Larry Earl won in stiff competition with their offering of “Bugler’s Holiday,” and Robert Morgan with his “Harlem Nocture” and “12th Street Rag.”

Girl Scout Sunday was observed by Carverton Girl Scout Troop No. 656 and Brownie Troop No. 635 at Carverton Methodist Church earlier this month. Members of the Brownie Troop present were: Mary Ann Meeker, Lynn Wolfe, Kathy Percy, Betty Casterline, Donna Cobleigh, Patty Willauer, Marion Cypulski, Patty Culver and Donna Hoover.

60 YEARS AGO — 1958

A boy in the sophomore class at Lehman-Jackson-Ross lost the tips of two fingers of the left hand Tuesday morning, when he ran them into a joiner in the school shop. Daniel Mahoney, 15, is at General Hospital. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Mahoney, Sweet Valley. His father is an experienced carpenter with Whitesell Brothers and the boy himself, according to Mr. Squier, supervising principal at the school, is one of the best craftsmen in the shop course.

Back Mountain Toastmasters plan a Ladies Night Dinner for members and wives Thursday evening at the American Legion Home in Dallas. Paul Monahan will preside, Ward Jacquish will give the invocation. Robert Laux will be toastmaster.

70 YEARS AGO — 1948

A fashion show of new Easter bonnets will be an added attraction at the Irem Temple Country Club tonight, when Evelyn Swank Jones entertains with the reading, “Mr. Roberts.” The reading is the last of a series to be sponsored by the Irem Temple Women Golfers. Miss Lee Harden of Pomeroy’s, who will direct the fashion show, is one of the golfers. Other golfers will act as models. A coupon for a gift hat will be the door prize.

Dallas Rotary Club meeting last week at Irem Temple Country Club admitted two new members. They are Charles A. Wagner of Shavertown, and Arlean T. Bowman, Dallas. Mr. Wagner is a diesel engineer, and Mr. Bowman is proprietor of Bowman’s Restaurant.

Dorcas Society of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church will sponsor a Farmer Dance in the Kingston Township High School Saturday, April 3. Mrs. George Kromelbein is chairman of the affair assisted by Mrs. William Lipfert and Mrs. James Owens, tickets; Mrs. Robert Doran, Mrs. Richard Ruddy and Mrs. Fred Eck, refreshments; and Mrs. Ted Woolbert, publicity. Bob Scott’s orchestra will furnish the music.
