DELAYS THAT BEGAN EARLY IN THE MORNING AND CONTINUED THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. ACTION NEWS REPORTER PHIL GOMEZ TELLS US WHAT WAS BEHIND TIE UPS IN BOTH DIRECTIONS. "ANY TIME WE HAVE ANY LANES THAT ARE BLOCKED IT CAUSES A SIGNFICANT BACK UP IT HAPPENED AT ABOUT 8:45, WEDNESDAY MORNING WHEN A BIG RIG AND A HONDA PILOT COLLIDED. THE TRUCK JACK KNIFED, BLOCKING BOTH NORTHBOUND LANES OF HIGHWAY 17, NORTH OF THE SUMMIT. FORTUNATELY, NEITHER DRIVER WAS INJURED. "APPROXIMATELY, 30-TO-40 MINUTES, CHP OFFICERS THAT WERE ON SCENE WERE ABLE TO ACTUALLY STRAIGHTEN THE VEHICLE OUT AND GET IT MOVED TO THE RIGHT HAND SHOULDER." HOWEVER, NO SOONER DID THE NORTHBOUND LANES CLEAR THAN TRAFFIC ALONG THE SOUTHBOUND DIRECTION CAME TO A CRAWL. FORCING FRUSTRATED DRIVERS OVER INTO ONE LANE. "IT'S SLOW. SLOW. NO HUGE DEAL, BUT IT WAS BORING, I GUESS." CAL FIRES HIGHWAY 17 FUEL BREAK PROJECT TOOK A VACATION DURING THE HOLIDAYS- BUT IS BACK. THE PROJECT COVERS A SIX AND A HALF MILE STRETCH OVER HIGHWAY 17 FROM SUMMIT ROAD NORTH TO LOS GATOS. FOR THOSE WHO COMMUTE: THE WORK USUALLY BEGINS AT NINE IN THE MORNING UNTIL THREE IN THE AFTERNOON, MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY, "WE TURNED THE CORNER LAST WEEK. SO, WE ARE STARTING IN ON THE SOUTHBOUND DIRECTION NOW. SO WE ARE JUST PAST THE 50% MARK . SO WE STILL HAVE QUITE A BIT OF GROUND TO COVER." SOME DRIVERS TOOK A TIME OUT BEFORE HEADING BACK OVER- THE-HILL. "I THINK IT NEEDS TO BE DONE. THE FIRE ISSUES ARE BIG HERE SO, IT'S JUST FRUSTRATING WHEN YOU FORGET ABOUT IT AND GET IN THE LINE AND GETTING STUCK IN THE TRAFFIC BUT I'M GETTING BETTER PREPARED." Commuters driving Highway 17 faced delays that began early Wednesday morning and continued through the afternoon."Any time we have any lanes that are blocked it causes a significant back up," said CHP Officer, Ross Lee from the San Jose Office.This accident happened about 8:45, Wednesday morning, when a big rig and a Honda Pilot collided. The truck jack-knifed, blocking both Northbound lanes of Highway 17, north of The Summit.Neither driver was injured."Approximately, 30-to-40 minutes, CHP officers that were on scene were able to actually straighten the vehicle out and get it moved to the right hand shoulder," said LeeHowever.No sooner did the Northbound lanes clear than traffic along the Southbound direction came to a crawl.
