SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) — If you’ve ever had a cracked windshield, the last thing you want to see is a gravel truck with a full load on the road before you. So, Michael wanted to know if they could legally do that.

In the pictures Michael sent us, the gravel load is above the rails and not covered. The Missouri State Highway Patrol tells us that all motor vehicles, trailers, and semi-trailers are required to use a protective cover when carrying goods or materials. The load should also be secured well enough, so wind or movement doesn’t dislodge material onto the road.

It’s a class C misdemeanor in Missouri. The current fine is about 130 dollars. During 2023, the patrol issued 206 citations and 881 warnings for this charge. So far, in 2024, the patrol has issued 36 citations and 220 warnings to date.

Back to Michael’s question, can they legally do that? The answer is NO. But if you see a truck like the one in Michael’s photos, the best advice is to avoid it.

In a previous segment, we addressed this question: Are trucks not liable for broken or cracked windshields? You can see the story here.
