Truck drivers in Manipur have launched a "steering wheel-down strike" to protest the militant attacks on oil tankers, demanding stringent action in the incident and ensuring security for the trucks.

The truck drivers, who held a sit-in protest at Malom Oil Depot in Imphal, announced that the protest will continue until their demands are met.

The drivers want adequate security on the highway as they are often attacked and looted by miscreants.

They also demand compensation for the injured drivers in the incident that happened on April 16.

More than 800 drivers of trucks carrying essential commodities, including petroleum products, which are being brought to the state from outside, are expected to join the steering wheel-down strike.

The strike by the truck drivers is likely to impact the local economy as well as commodity prices in the state.
