ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced the 2024 fishing season for four kinds of coolwater sportfish.

The fishing season for walleye, northern pike, pickerel, and tiger muskellunge will begin on May 1. According to the DEC, walleye are challenging to catch and good to eat which makes them the most prized sportfish in New York. They added that they are the largest member of the perch family and adults can way around one to three pounds or more.

Officials with DEC added that an 18-pound 2-ounce walleye caught from the St. Lawrence River in 2018 set a State Record that has yet to be beaten.

“New York is home to exceptional cool water fishing opportunities, with many lakes and rivers renowned for abundant walleye and aggressive pike and pickerel,” said Interim Commissioner Mahar. “We hope that all anglers find the time to enjoy these fishing opportunities in 2024 and encourage those with more experience to share their enjoyment by introducing someone new to the sport.”

Northern pike can also be found throughout the state, and opportunities for trophy-size fish are available in a number of waters, especially in the northeast and west.
