Barrage of hits lifts Farmington to win

GRAVETTE -- Farmington came out swinging Thursday in the opening round of the Class 4A state softball tournament.

The Lady Cardinals ripped 14 hits in a 10-0 victory over Clinton in five innings at the Gravette Softball Complex.

Reese Shirey, Morgan Uher and Amia Carr each had three hits for the Lady Cardinals.

Shirey scored 3 runs and had an RBI, Uher drove in 2 runs while Carr scored twice and had 2 RBI. Bella Hulsey also hit a two-run home for Farmington.

"Up and down the lineup, it was a big day for everybody," Farmington Coach Jason Shirey said. "And if they didn't have a hit, it was a sacrifice fly. It was moving base runners."

Morgan Reaves threw a four-hit shutout for the Lady Cardinals (20-5), who will play Nashville at 10 a.m. Friday. Reaves had six strikeouts and one walk.

Shirey reached on single and wound up at third after an error before scoring on Uher's double in the first for a 1-0 lead.

Shirey had an RBI groundout and Uher another RBI hit in the second for a 3-0 lead. Justine Davidson, Carr and Griggs each drove in runs in the third as Farmington went up 6-0. Hulsey's two-run shot highlighted a four-run fourth with Carr also driving in a run in the inning.

Lexi Wallace, Kate Henry, Aliviah Johnson and Abigail Parks each had base hits for Clinton (17-9).

MALVERN 7, WYNNE 6

Rayna Morgan's infield hit with the bases loaded scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Lady Leopards.

Trailing 6-5, Malvern's Chasney Cooper led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk, stole second and third and scored on an error to tie it at 6-6. Kendall Watson reached on a single up the middle and courtesy runner Addi White moved into scoring position with a stolen base. A.J. Fike was intentionally walked and Bella Roseberry was hit by a pitch to load the bases, setting up Morgan's game-winning hit.

Kendall Watson had four hits and pitched a complete game for Malvern, which plays at 12:30 p.m. on Friday against Gentry. Fike and Alexis Jenkins each had two hits.

Caty Moore, Katie Hodges and Savannah Brown each had two hits for Wynne (15-8).

STAR CITY 3, GRAVETTE 0

The Lady Bulldogs scored all three runs in the top of the seventh inning, and Kendal Jones finished off a complete game shutout with three strikeouts to eliminate the defending 4A champions on their home field.

The Lady Lions (16-11) committed three errors in the seventh, which aided Star City's big inning.

Emma Berry blooped a bases-loaded single to right over a drawn-in infield to give the Lady Bulldogs (14-11) a 2-0 lead. Star City made it 3-0 when Gabby Hunsucker hit a single and another run scored on an error.

Gravette pitcher Meara Russell pitched 5 1/3 no-hit innings to open the game and pitched into the seventh before being relieved by Brooke Handle.

Star City plays Friday against Bauxite.

PEA RIDGE 4, BROOKLAND 0

Emory Bowlin threw a complete game shutout with eight strikeouts as the Lady Blackhawks advanced.

Pea Ridge scored two runs in the third to go up 2-0 as Zaylee Warden and Emory Bowlin each had RBI hits.

The Blackhawks added single runs in the sixth and seventh.

Hope Konkler reached on an infield hit and later scored on a miscommunication on the Brookland infield.

Bowlin hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh for a 4-0 lead.

The Lady Blackhawks advanced to Friday's 5:30 p.m. quarterfinals against Monticello.
